Migrating from Equallogic to 3Par 7200

Post by velocity08 »

Hi All

We are currently running vSphere 5.5 on Equallogic and will be migrating our core services to 3Par 7200 in the coming weeks. looking for anyone who has experience with running the 2 systems in parallel and has any tips or experience they wish to share to migrate from Equ > 3Par.

I have heard there may be issues with the Equallogic MPOI (mem) iSCSI driver as 3Par just use the standard VMware round robin iSCSI drivers and there could be some conflict.

thanks in advance.

While migrating, on connect (zone) your esx to 3PAR through one path.

We did that type of migration in the summer, we did switch from EQL (ISCSI) to 3par 7200 (FC).

I just did storage vmotion of my VMs, and everything worked out fine.

I would recommend you reading through the 3par best practices for Vsphere, so you have a correct supported configuration:

What kind of SAN Infra you have? FC?

If so, create seperate zones with your host and 3par, provide new VV''s to your hosts from the 3par and migrate with SVM. Create first a test-environment. I would also suggest to check before migrate the interopability between the EQ MPIO stack with the native SATP/MP policy's from VMWare.

Be noticed about the fact that SVM is not VAAI supported between array's, so ESX is doing mostly the work.
