I am hoping that someone can review my plan what I have and provide any suggestions. Did I miss anything or does this look good?
I have a 3PAR 7200 (2 node) with 2 drive enclosures and I am looking to expand this to 4 Drive Enclosures.
I downloaded the "HPE_c04441589_HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Series Storage Cabling Configuration Guide A_ Two Node System with.pdf" from [https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/do ... =c04441589]
I reviewed the 2 Controller with 2 Drive Enclosure cabling and this matches my current cabling for my 7200 (pg 14)
Current Legend:
(Green) - Page 18
1 - Node 0 DP-1 to Node 2 DP-1
2 - Node 0 DP-2 to Node 1 DP-1
(Red) - Page 18
3 - Node 0 DP-1 to Node 2 DP-1
4 - Node 0 DP-2 to Node 1 DP-1
Then I looked at my future or expanded 2 Controller with 4 Drive Enclosure - pg 25
Future/Expanded Legend:
(Green) - Page 30
1 - Node 0 DP-1 to Node 4 DP-1
2 - Node 0 DP-2 to Node 3 DP-1
3 - Node 1 DP-1 to Node 3 DP-2
4 - Node 2 DP-1 to Node 4 DP-2
(Red)- Page 28
5 - Node 0 DP-1 to Node 2 DP-1
6 - Node 0 DP-2 to Node 1 DP-1
7 - Node 1 DP-2 to Node 3 DP-1
8 - Node 2 DP-2 to Node 4 DP-1
I know that when we start the expansion we need to perform the cable moves & adds to one side (Green or Red) then the other side, so I started with the Green side first and then the Red side, I can't recall if it matters Green or Red first, but I'm thinking it doesn't matter which side we perform the cable moves/adds to first as long as we have dual connectivity in the red side we should be ok to start with the Green side.
I am thinking to perform the following changes, starting with moving and adding the cables for the Green side. Just FYI I have licensing (System is licensed for unlimited disks.)
- use checkhealth to see if 3PAR is OK
- Install/rack the new cages with the new Disks and Power On
- prepare the SAS Cable
- Cable the green side first
(Green Side First)
1. Move [Node 0 DP-1 from Node 2 DP-1] to [Node 4 DP-1]
2. Move [Node 0 DP-2 from Node 1 DP-1] to [Node 3 DP-1]
3. Add [Node 1 DP-1 to Node 3 DP-2]
4. Add [Node 2 DP-1 to Node 4 DP-2]
- use showcage to check
- Cable the red side next
(Red Side)
1. Stays the same - No Change [Node 0 DP-1 to Node 2 DP-1]
2. Stays the same - No Change [Node 0 DP-2 to Node 1 DP-1]
3. Add [Node 1 DP-2 to Node 3 DP-1]
4. Add [Node 2 DP-2 to Node 4 DP-1]
- use showcage to check
- admithw (wait if firmware is applied)
- showpd -c (wait until all chunklets are initiaisized) (showpd command displays configuration information about a system's physical disks. -c Shows chunklet usage information. Any chunklet in a failed disk will be shown as "Fail".) Once the new physical disks are successfully admitted to the system, initialization of the chunklets is automatic. Use the "showpd -c" command to see how many uninitialized chunklets remain on each disk.
- use checkhealth to see if 3PAR is OK
- use tunesys to start leveling
Thanks for any feedback, appreciated
3PAR Expansion
Re: 3PAR Expansion
My general recommendation.
Keep one hand in your pocket and one hand doing the work (ie, never work on more than one end of one cable at a time). Sometimes you need to break a loop.
The Red and Green cables are SAS loops.
If you look at the illustrations the general thing going thru the illustrations is that the first connection from the nodes will go into one IOMs DP-1. In the same IOM you have DP-2 going to another DP-1.
You should rephrase your naming. You only have 2 nodes... Both nodes are in E0 (enclosure 0). A 7200 with 4 cages, will have E0-E3. So you should be reviewing page 19 and onwards in your guide.
